About Team Geared UP!

Geared UP! is a robotics team and part of Ashburn Robotics, a non-profit group of FIRST Lego League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams from Loudoun County, Virginia. Team Geared UP! has competed in FIRST Lego League (FLL) for 4 years, winning multiple regional, state and national/international awards. They now focus on FTC, where they were the 2015/16 Virginia Inspire Award winners and were the 2017 World Championship Motivate Award Finalist. They spread hands-on STEM education both in their local community and the world through numerous workshops, demonstrations and  their innovative, low cost, Craft-A-Bot robotics kit which they brought to the 2015 FLL World Championship and received the 1st place Inspiration Award.

What is FTC?

In the FIRST Tech Challenge teams (grades 7-12) are challenged to design, build, program, and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format. Participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have!” Guided by adult Coaches and Mentors, students develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles (such as keeping an engineering notebook), while realizing the value of hard work, innovation, and sharing ideas. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and can be programmed using a variety of languages. Teams also must raise funds, design and market their team brand, and do community outreach for which they can win awards. Participants have access to tens of millions of dollars in college scholarships. Each season concludes with regional Championships and an exciting FIRST Championship.
