As a FIRST ambassador team, we do many hours of outreach every season, and a big part of that is mentoring FIRST teams. That’s why we have taken steps to mentor a team in FIRST’s newest program－FIRST Global.
This year, FIRST has taken a huge step to promote STEM and robotics around the world through the Olympic-style competition of FIRST Global. This competition consists of more than a hundred nations each sending one team to represent them this year in the competition, held in Washington, D.C. The program shares similarities with the FIRST Tech Challenge. For example, the challenge changes yearly, with this year’s being H2O Flow. Teams must use the REV parts kit on their robots, along with the REV Control System.
Our team is helping to mentor the FIRST Global team from Trento, Italy, which is their country’s national team. We found out about mentoring FIRST Global teams after talking to fellow FTC team, Tuxedo Pandas. We talked to the outreach coordinator for the program. Our plan is to Skype with them at least once a month to talk about their progress and answer any questions they may have. Our first call with them was on April 13th, where we got to meet the team. We learned that they are experienced in Java and Arduino. We think this will be a great experience, as both of our teams will gain experience and have fun.
