The first year the team existed, the challenge, Power Puzzle, focused on how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life today, tomorrow and in the future. NXTreme conducted an energy audit of the Ashburn Library and found a number of small ways for the building to improve their energy consumption.

This year’s challenge, Climate Connections, focused on the importance of climate and earth’s complex climate systems. NXTreme studied the effects of the freeze thaw cycle on roads in Virginia and after talking to road engineers, developed “Fall Flow and Go” a road design that utilized a sloped surface and drains along the shoulders to move water off the road surface before it could freeze.

This year’s challenge, Smart Moves, focused on accessing people, places goods and services in the safest, most efficient way possible. Teams considered many modes of transportation beyond their daily routine and streamlined their options by making smart moves.

This year’s challenge, Body Forward, focused improving our quality of life. Teams explored the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body’s potential.
